Microneedling is one of the most popular and effective facial enhancement procedures available today and at LG Aesthetica, we use the revolutionary SkinPen device! Sometimes known as Collagen Induction Therapy, for its amazing effects on our skin’s natural collagen stores, Microneedling is a minimally-invasive method of rejuvenating the skin and reducing the appearance of unwanted blemishes, scars, wrinkles, and much more!
The Skinpen by Bellus Medical
The Skinpen was developed by Bellus Medical. The first microneedling ‘pen’ that’s been FDA-approved and clinically proven to treat a variety of skin conditions and blemishes, the SkinPen is a handheld device that contains a series of tiny needles. When the device is moved over the skin, the needles create microscopic channels in the skin’s surface. These channels trigger the body’s natural healing response, which includes the production of new collagen and elastin fibers. As the skin heals, it becomes smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking.
How Does SkinPen Microneedling Work?
Microneedling is one of the most effective methods of skin rejuvenation available, industry-wide. The SkinPen microneedling procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Prior to the treatment, a numbing cream may be applied to the skin to minimize any discomfort.
During the procedure, the SkinPen device is moved over the skin in a specific pattern, creating thousands of microchannels in the skin’s surface. Once the procedure is complete, a soothing serum or mask may be applied to the skin to aid in the healing process. These controlled micro-injuries are able to stimulate the body’s own naturally regenerative processes.
Microneedling is relatively pain-free and most patients will only feel minor discomfort. Think of it like a series of tiny pin pricks. As with any other cut you might sustain, our body sends a signal to stimulate the natural wound-healing process, to restore and rejuvenate any damaged tissue. Microneedling uses the same concept to treat issues like wrinkles, unwanted blemishes, skin discolorations, scar tissue, and more.
Microneedling relies on a 3-phase process our body uses to repair and rejuvenate itself when injured.
- Phase I: Inflammation
When the skin is pierced and damaged, the immune system is triggered to act immediately. It works to disinfect the wound, remove any debris, increase blood flow to the area, and stimulate cellular regeneration to create new tissue. - Phase 2: Proliferation
Cellular regeneration helps rebuild the tissue in the area, using new granulation cells – a vital part of the extracellular matrix. In addition, brand new blood vessels begin to develop to improve circulation and tissue proliferation. - Phase 3: Remodeling
The wounded or damaged skin tissue is completely replaced by freshly created skin tissue and new blood vessels.
During this skin cell regeneration process, any unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, scars and otherwise damaged skin tissue is resurfaced away and replaced with fresh, youthful skin cells. The procedure is also known as collagen induction therapy because it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the skin, which helps to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and more.
